This well-preserved 1974 Mark VI Tenor comes to us from her original owner who purchased her in 1974 to accompany his Super Balanced Action, also in our showroom (see SBA Tenor 42XXX). With over 95% original lacquer remaining, it strikes an unusual balance of looking like a brand new tenor and playing like a broken-in horn. The extreme ranges of the 231,XXX are its calling card: the low range is intense, sounding honking or resolute, and the palm keys and altissimo project easily, with a presence and focus that is essential for louder playing situations.
This horn was given an overhaul a few years ago and has plastic domed resonators. The original lacquer is a nice honeyed yellow; it is not as dark as some of the earlier Selmers but still gorgeous, especially with so much of it surviving to this day. It is an American-assembled VI, and the neck is in great condition. This horn would sound great on a jazz gig, but its high and low registers may be of better use in a louder situation, such as R&B or pop music. A pleasure to play!!!
